Report from Group C Training Race 3-8-09 . A sprint finish...for 3 rd. Twenty-five riders started the C race. A headwind was blowing down the start finish line through the camp.As we made our way out of the camp, it was clear that eveyone was staying off the front. The first right turn heading toward the hills split the group into 2 groups.
Soon after, a breakaway of 4 riders left those of us in the front group. No one wanted to chase on the first lap of 3. As we came back into the park the wind blew hard, I crossed the line 4th in our group. The break was away by @1 1/2 minutes. We left the camp again, struggling into the wind, I worked my way to the front to try and pick up the pace. I looked over my shoulder, the group was letting me go, hoping I would tire. I backed off and pulled in the front group amongst about 4 riders willing to work. I was first to cross the line on the bell lap, the break was ahead @ 1minute. I wanted to catch the break, but no one would help. We all bided out time, stayed together and did the hills. Heading into the camp , 2 of the break away riders were picked up. We fought the wind, a paceline formed, we were going to sprint for third. I held my ground in line @ 6th,in our group as we passed the lake. Suddenly full speed, I passed a few and a few got away. I finished either 6 or 7 overall, and it was a blast to stay up front and sprint even if we didn't catch those 2 break away riders . Steve George |
